The A-News 2 Year Anniversary

Two years ago this month my partner Brian Allen and I released the very first episode of A-News and since we have stuck by it for this long we thought we would do something special.  This coming April the 28th at 8pm EST we will be hosting the very first live two hour A-News special via Google Hangouts. We are calling in some of our favorite guests and journalists from the past two years like Steve Shives and Blair Scott. For more information on this night of awesome check out our event page on facebook https://www.facebook.com/events/166963740129297/

The Weirdest Place in the World to be an Atheist

A Buddhist temple in the middle of urban Shanghai is crowded with tourists during China’s National Holiday in October. Scenes like this are an example of the head-spinning contradictions in modern China, one of the few nations in the world to hold an official policy of atheism. If you’re a dyed-in-the-wool, Hitchens-quoting antitheist like myself, it might seem that the state-sponsored atheism of a country like China would be a welcome alternative to the overwhelming religiosity of the United States. In the days when I was considering a return to school after a decade of mediocrity and mistakes, I floundered in trying to find the self confidence to take that step and just do it.  There I was, a struggling single mom well into her twenties working customer service jobs I hated and living with my parents because I had no other option. I was just too poor and it was just too late for me.  Eventually I took that step after several stern lectures and the fact that I really didn’t see much of option. However I was still floundering. I didn’t know what I was good...

2012: A year in atheism

In less than 12 hours, as has been the custom for generations, the year 2012 will become history and the new year of 2013 shall rise from it, symbolized by the drop of a giant ball on Times Square in New York City. This will be accompanied by lots of partying, drinking and other forms of celebration among the more amorous celebrants. As we look forward to a New Year of scientific discoveries, social progress and continued challenges, let’s take a look back on a year that has seen tremendous changes in the global secular community: Some good, and some bad. The Good For...
